Howard was born 1916. He died 1975. He was buried in St. John's Reformed Church Cemetery.

[Barnhart/Warter] has inconsistent information on Howard. When tracing his Barnhart descent, it has him as Howard Hartman and the children have that surname. When tracing Dorothy's Barnhart descent, it notes she married Howard Swartzlander and the children use this surname. It does not notice that these two individuals are the same person. I've elected to go with Hartman since that is his father's name.

Sue Roach offers the following, which I find a quite plausible possibility:

It appears to me that Howard likely used the Swartzlander surname at least from 1916 until 1932 when his parents were married. Joseph Thomas Hartman also married Matilda Sophia Hohage on Jan 29, 1913 in Cumberland, Maryland. They had a son William Louise born in 1914 and another son John Henry born in 1926. Matilda did not die until 1958. Joseph, Matilda, Cora and John are all buried in the Glade Run cemetery. This looks like one of those family mysteries to me. Perhaps Matilda did not wish to give Joseph a divorce but finally relented, or perhaps she did not know he was "cheating" on her.
