Samuel was born Abt 1839. He died 7 Aug 1931.

Samuel served with Co A. 148th Regt., Pennsylvania Infantry. The Department of the Interior shows him enlisting on 25 Aug 1862; the War Department has the date as 19 Aug 1862. A Declaration for Pension by John Musser, Justice of the Peace for Centre Co., Pennsylvania has the date as 23 Aug 1862. He was mustered out on 1 June 1865 in Alexandria, Virginia.

He was captured on 25 Aug 1864 at the Second Battle of Reams Station in Virginia when C.S. Major General Henry Heth attacked and overran the weak Union position.

He was confined first in Richmond, Virginia, then later in Salisbury, North Carolina. He was paroled at N.E. Ferry, North Carolina on July 25, 1865. From that point on he had health problems and received a pension.

On the 1870 Census, Samuel is in Gregg Twp., Centre Co., Pennsylvania with his family. He is a merchant with real estate values at $1,000 and personal possessions at $2,000.

The 1890 Census indicates that he was imprisoned at Belle Isle in Virginia. However, according to Collier's Encyclopedia, Belle Isle was in operation only until the end of 1863, when all prisoners were transferred to Andersonville, Georgia.

On April 18, 1896, Samuel was living in Aaronsburg, Centre Co., Pennsylvania. His civilian occupation was as a teacher and then Post Master of Madisonburg, Pennsylvania.

The 1920 Census of Miles Twp., Centre Co., Pennsylvania lists his occupation as post master.

Samuel married #359 Susan Yearick.
