After graduating from Cornell College at Mt. Vernon, Iowa, he enlisted in the Army. He served in Co. A, Medical Officers Training Camp, Ft. Riley, Kansas, and then with the Medical Department, 351st Infantry at Camp Dodge, Iowa. He attended the University of Loulouse in France and was later appointed a Lieutenant.
He entered Harvard Medical School and received his MD in 1916. He practiced medicine in Owatonna, Iowa.
