She had the name of May until she was an adult and added the name of Helen. May started teaching school at Wagram at the age of 18. She taught many of her younger brothers and sisters. She attended Ohio State in summer terms. They were married at Helen's home in Licking Co., Ohio and then moved to a farm in Section 1, Bronson Twp., Huron Co., Ohio at the intersection of Town Line and Edwards Roads. Scott had purchased the farm which was across Town Line Road from his mother's farm. The family stayed in Athens to finish high school and college. In 1943 they moved to Cambridge, Ohio.

Scott was born 1 Jun 1882 in Fitchville Twp., Huron Co., Ohio. He died 25 Dec 1970 in Cambridge, Ohio. He was buried in Fitchville Cemetery, Huron Co., Ohio.

He is the son of Joseph Pugh & Rachel Jane (Keen) Hartman.

Scott was born in Fitchville Twp., Huron Co., Ohio on the "thirty acres" and moved with his parents to the Keen farm. He went back to Fitchville to live with his grandmother, Betsy, while he attended Fitchville High School. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1908 and received his Masters Degree in Agriculture in 1910. In 1917 Scott joined the Ohio Agricultural Extension Agency and they moved to Marietta, Washington Co., Ohio where Scott managed the state experiment farm. In 1928 he moved to Athens, Ohio. In 1937 he worked for the U S Soil Conservation Service in Falmouth, Kentucky and later in Cambridge, Ohio.
