Forest was born 4 Mar 1904 in Redkey, Jay Co., Indiana. She died 9 Apr 1959 in Folsom, Sacramento Co., California. She was buried in Lakeside Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Folsom, Sacramento Co., California.
Before she was born, her father, hoping for a boy, had already decided the new baby would be named Forest Allen, and even though the baby proved to be a girl, the name of Forest was still retained. The name of Forest was instrumental in her being drafted during World War II. Although Forest thought it was a joke, the Draft Board took it more seriousy, and sent out two men to bring in this relucantant draftee. Imagine their embarrassment and chagrin, when they discovered that Forest J. Henderson was really Mrs. Forest Juanita Henderson. She had a deep contralto voice which often led to confusion on the telephone. But Juanita enjoyed the confusion that her name and voice often caused. She was a highly intelligent woman, graduated from high school at age 13 and from Business College at age 15. At the beginning of World War II, she worked for the Western Pacific Railroad, as a fireman, firing engines before they left the roundhouse. She was also a practical nurse and travelled with sick railroad people on trains. During the latter part of the War, she worked for the government as a Payroll timekeeper. Even as a child, Juanita had a love for trains. As a child of 8, she once rode the cow-catcher of an engine from her home town to the next stop for that train, where she was kindly put right back on the train and returned to her home.
