He is shown on the 1850 Federal Census of Donegal Twp., Butler Co., Pennsylvania as a wagonmaker. Living nearby is his brother, Daniel and family. Also nearby is his cousin, John B. Barnhart (son of John Philip Barnhart), and his family, as well as his cousin, Andrew Barnhart (son of Rudolf Barnhart), and family.

On the 1860 Federal Census the family has moved to Hempfield Twp. in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. The older four children are present and a carpenter, John Craig, is living with them.

By the 1870 Federal Census John has switched to farming in Hempfield Twp.

On the 1880 Federal Census he is a wagon maker in Unity Twp., Westmoreland Co.

What might be his FindAGrave entry (based upon death date) showed his middle name as Clark although this doesn't appear on the grave marker. The person who created the entry did not add the middle name and there is no attribute or source. Since I now manage the entry, I've altered it.
