#37954 John Andrew "Andrew" Rosensteel ( John Andreas "Andrew" RosensteelJohannes Rosensteel )

Other names for Andrew: Andreas Rosensteel.

Andrew was born 9 Aug 1785 in N. Huntingdon, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. He was baptised 9 Oct 1785 in Harold Zion Lutheran Church, Hempfield Twp., Pennsylvania. He died 17 Nov 1862 in N. Huntingdon, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. He was buried in Milliron Church Cemetery, Youngwood, Pennsylvania.

He was a farmer.

[Hedley] gives his birth date as 1789 and his death date as 1844.

[Baumgarten] cites Robert Rosensteel's book, The Rosensteels of America:

John Andrew Jr. took communion on Oct 20 1799 at the First Lutheran Church, Greensburg PA. Nov 16 1863 - Son David purchased 95 acres of ground from his father's estate at $18.35 per acre. The entire acreage could not be divided among nine children without ruining the entire 95 acres. This decision was made by 12 "able-bodied" men in Deed Volume #49, Pages 606 through 608, dated Jan 1864.

He appears on the 1820 Federal Census of Hempfield Twp., Pennsylvania as John Andrew Rosensteel, Junior. Living with him are three boys under age 10, a woman in the 25–45 bracket who is presumably Christina, one girl under age 10 and three girls 10–16. There are four candidates for the three young boys since Daniel wasn't born until three months after the census was taken: David, John Andrew, Jonathan and John. The youngest girl is probably Anna Catherine and the three older ones: Sarah, Mary and Susanna. Andrew is marked as a farmer on this census.

Looking through the images of the 1830 Census, the only Rosensteel I see is a George Rosensteel.

On the 1840 Federal Census of Hempfield Twp., Andrew is with woman in the 30–40 age bracket. This is presumably his second wife, Catherine. There are four other males: one 10–15, two 15–20, one 20–30. There is a John Rosensteel, age 20–30 living next door. Presumably this is his son but, given the ubiquitous nature of that first name in this family, it's not certain.

On the 1850 Federal Census of Hempfield Twp., Andrew and Catherine have his youngest son, Michael, living with them.

Finally, the 1860 Federal Census shows him, Catherine, and their son David. Andrew's real estate is valued at $2,000 and his personal estate at $800.

Andrew married first #10302 Christina Berry. She is the daughter of James & Mary (Russ) Berry.

Marriage notes

They married 1804.

Christina was born 12 Dec 1783/1784 in N. Huntingdon, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. She died 20 Oct 1832 in N. Huntingdon, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. She was buried in Milliron Church Cemetery, Youngwood, Pennsylvania.

[Landis] shows her surname as Reiss and her father as Adam Reiss. The majority of genealogies I've seen show her surname as Berry and don't list her father.

[Landis] has the year of her birth as 1874 and the location of her death as Hempfield Twp.
