#1958 Andrew White ( James WhiteAndrew White )

Andrew was born Abt 1787 in Pennsylvania. He died Bef 1860.

Since the only names recorded on the early censuses were those of the head of household, we cannot identify individuals for certain. However, it seems reasonable that Andrew is the male of appropriate age in his father's household on the 1790 Federal Census, 1800 Federal Census, 1810 Federal Census and the 1820 Federal Census.

On the 1830 Federal Census we find him in an unexpected age bracket. We expect him in the 40-49 column but he appears in the 30-39 column. With him are: one woman 20-29, presumably Elizabeth; one girl 10-14, for whom we have no name; one girl under 5, which could be Nancy; one boy 10-14, also unnamed.

The unmatched boy and girl raise the question as to whether Andrew had a previous marriage. Elizabeth would have been only 10 at the latest date they could have been born. There is a significant gap between Andrew's age and hers. Looking at the 1820 Census for his father, one interpretation shows this young boy there also and there are sufficient women in the age bracket where a previous wife of Andrew's might fall. It's not unreasonable that a first wife died, perhaps in childbirth, and he remarried in the intervening 5-9 years before Nancy's birth.

In order not to lose track of these individuals, I've recorded it that way but it is highly speculative.

The 1840 Federal Census shows Andrew as a farmer in Unity Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. With Andrew are two females, ages 30-40 and 5-10, and three males, two aged 5-10 and one under 5. The women would be his wife, Elizabeth, and oldest daughter, Nancy. For the boys, only two of those who will show up in the next census would have been born, James and Andrew. This suggests another boy who left home or died by 1850.

The 1850 Federal Census shows him still a farmer in Unity Twp. His land was worth $4,500.

By the 1860 Census, he no longer shows with the family.

Andrew married second #1972 Elizabeth.

Elizabeth was born 1810 in Pennsylvania. She died 16 Oct 1883. She was buried in St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania.

The 1850 Federal Census of Unity Twp., Pennsylvania shows her as 35, a birth year of Abt 1815. The 1860 Federal Census of Unity Twp., shows her as 55, a birth year of Abt 1805. In 1860, her real estate was worth $600 and her personal possessions $260. A Margaret Hessian, pauper, was living with her.

We see what might be their farm on the 1867 Atlas of Westmoreland County Co. Pennsylvania on the southwest side of Unity Twp. It's listed as belonging to Mrs. E. White.

I have not found Elizabeth on the 1870 Census or the 1880 Census.
