#177 Henry Cohen ( Berl "Barnet" CohenJoseph Cohen )

Other names for Henry: Michael Cohen.

Henry was born 15 Aug 1885 in Pinsk, Russia. He died 22 Jul 1957 in New York City, New York. He was buried 24 Jul 1957 in Cedar Park Cemetery, Paramus, New Jersey.

He is in the group picture «here».

Based upon birth year and birth order, I am tentatively identifying Henry and Michael Cohen as the same individual. Barney's and Bessie's oldest boy is listed as Michael Cohen on the 1910 Census of Manhattan, born Abt 1886. He is a tailor and can speak English. However, later censuses list Henry as their oldest son, born Abt 1885. This census lists his year of immigration as 1905, as it does all members of the family. However, we know that to be untrue in some cases as Bessie and the younger children came in 1907.

According to his World War I Draft Registration, he was of medium height and build, with black hair and blue eyes. It shows him as a presser employed by what looks to be C. Cohen. It also gives us his birth date.

The 1920 Census shows Henry owning a three-family home at 751 Crotona Park North in the Bronx. Keeve and family are renting one of the other units in house and the Riceberg family from Germany has the third. Henry is shown as immigrating in 1902. His naturalization status is "Pa" which means that he has filed his initial papers with the court. In this case, this was presumably done in 1919 as that year is written in the column for date of naturalization. His profession appears to read "Operator Dresses". I'm not sure what that is supposed to convey, but he was in the ladies garment business with Julius Relkin.

On the 1930 Census of the Bronx, Keeve's family and the Ricebergs have moved out and Barent and Bessie have moved in with their daughters. This census mistakenly lists Henry and Yetta as born in Poland. His immigration has slid a year to 1903.

There is a possible M. Cohen, born in Russia, who is a tailor, arriving 13 Aug 1902 aboard the S. S. Oceanic. He lists his destination as New York City, where he is meeting his sister, who is not named beyond Miss Cohen. This Mr. Cohen was born Abt 1882, which might be too much of a stretch.

Henry married #765 Yetta "Yetta" Lederman.

Marriage notes

They married Abt 1904.

Yetta was born Abt 1885 in Russia. She died 22 Feb 1973. She was buried 25 Feb 1973 in Cedar Park Cemetery, Paramus, New Jersey.

She is in the group picture «here» and «here».

On the 1920 Census, Yetta is shown as immigrating in 1903. She has also filed her initial paperwork for citizenship.

On the 1930 Census, her age has slipped a year younger in relation to Henry and her immigration has slipped a year to 1904.
