#179 Judel "Julius" Cohen ( Berl "Barnet" CohenJoseph Cohen )

Julius was born 16 Dec 1891/1894 in Pinsk, Russia. He died 25 May 1965 in Bronx, Bronx Co., New York. He was buried in Cedar Park Cemetery, Paramus, New Jersey.

He is in the group picture «here».

The SSDI gives his date of birth as 16 Dec 1889. Census records are Abt 1892. On his naturalization application he stated his birth date as 16 Dec 1893. On his World War I Draft Registration the year was 1891 and on his World War II Draft Registration it was 1894.

Despite what it says on later censuses, we find Julius on the passenger lists «here» for 3 Nov 1906, arriving on the S.S. Kaiserin Augusta Victoria which sailed from Hamburg, Germany. He is listed as a tailor from Pinsk, Russia and is being met by his father, Berl Cohn. His name is heavily scratched out and re-entered as Yodel Cohen. If we look at the attached Record of Detained Aliens on which he appears, his name is given as Judel Cohn. The original name on the manifest is illegible but the letter loops that appear above and below might be the same as Judel Cohn. His naturalization applications agree with the passenger list about the date of entry.

He appears on the 1910 Census of Manhattan with his parents. He is working as a peddler of old clothes and immigrated in 1905.

His World War I Draft Registration gives his profession as some type of peddler; the ink has faded to much to be more specific. He was of medium height and build, with black hair and brown eyes.

He is living with his parents in 1920 in the Bronx. He is working as a salesman in his own business. He had the J. & K. Cohen Furniture Company with his brother, Keeve. This census erroneously gives his year of immigration as 1912.

On the 1930 Census we find the him and his family living at 1511 Sheridan Ave. in the Bronx. This also says he immigrated in 1912 and has filed his initial naturalization papers. He is the proprietor of a furniture store.

On the 1940 Census they are at 1175 Morris Ave. in the Bronx. Julius owns a furniture store. He was still not naturalized at this point. This occurred on 19 May 1941. His application was witnessed by Yetta Cohen and Sadie Cohen.

Julius married #801 Bessie Brown.

Marriage notes

They married 24 Dec 1922 in Congregation Kol Israel, New York City, New York.

Bessie was born 3 Feb 1900 in New York City, New York. She died 21 Nov 1969. She was buried 24 Nov 1969 in Cedar Park Cemetery, Paramus, New Jersey.

She is in the group picture «here».

She is the daughter of Samuel & Beckie (Trussel) Brown.

Her age varies quite a bit between the censuses, her marriage license (Abt 1900) and Julius' application for naturalization (Abt 1897), up to her death certificate (1904). I haven't found Bessie in the Social Security Death Index yet.
