#46 Shmoel Shoel "Samuel" Cominsky ( Judah Cominsky )

Other names for Samuel: Samuel Kaminsky.

Samuel was born Abt 1817 in Slutsk, Russia. He died 7 Nov 1912 in Manhattan, New York Co., New York. He was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Maspeth, Queens Co., New York.

His birth year is varies quite a bit based upon the source. Some sources give it as early as 1817, some as late at 1826.

Without documentation of name changes, identifying people in the census record can be uncertain but we appear to find him in 1910 Federal Census of Manhattan, New York as Samuel Kaminsky. With him are his wife, Rebecca (presumably Riva), Max, Samuel, Rachel (presumably Rae) and Nathan, as well as three boarders. He gives his age as 84, which would put his birth year around 1826 instead of 1817 as reported by some researchers. They report 14 children of which 8 are living. He immigrated in 1906 and has not started the citizenship process. Neither he nor his wife speak English, but all the children living with them do.

There are a number of Samuel Kaminskys found on passenger lists but, so far, none around 1906 of approximately the correct age. It's worth noting that a Russian couple, Schmul & Rifke Kaminsky, are listed aboard the ship Leopard, which departed Hamburg for New York on 23 Jul 1872. He is listed as born about 1816 and she about 1822. Since this was before their marriage, it seems unlikely to be our individuals.

His listing in the New York City Death index gives his age as 90 instead of 95, thereby estimating his birth as Abt 1822.

Samuel married first #44 Nachameh Lebansky.

Relationship notes

They married Bef 1855 in Slutsk, Russia.

Nachameh died 1855 in Slutsk, Russia.

The Cominsky Circle website lists the Black Death (bubonic plague) as the cause of her death and that of the three children other than Jacob. While this is certainly possible, the third outbreak of the plague was just getting started in southern China in 1855 and wasn't reported in the Russian Empire until close to 1900. However, in 1855 the Russian Empire was in the midst of the massive cholera pandemic that killed over 1,000,000 people: one out of roughly every fifteen. My suspicion is that she and her children succumbed to this.
