#146 Marcus "Mottel" Neumann ( Yisroel Leib NeumannChaim Jossef Neumann )

Other names for Mottel: Marcus Newman.

Mottel was born 1858 in Husiatyn, Ukraine. He died Aft 1930 in New York City, New York Co., New York.

He is in the group picture «here».

His birth date has been variously given as 1858 and Mar 1835. His marriage license lists his birth place as Austria. The death certificate of his first wife gives her surname as Neumann, implying that Marcus probably used that spelling early on.

He is listed on the 1900 Federal Census Providence, Rhode Island. His name is indexed as Maurice Newman and someone else has added a note of Marcia Newman but close examination shows Marcus. His birth date is listed as 1858. His birth place is shown as Austria. At the time of his birth, Husiatyn was in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

This census shows he immigrated in 1887 and was naturalized. He is listed as a peddler. His parents were born in Austria, probably with the same understanding of what that means.

On the 1910 Federal Census we find him in Manhattan in New York City. He is working as an insurance agent. He is listed as speaking English although we note that a later census lists the language spoken at home as Yiddish. The entry for the number of years married is 25, which would put the marriage Abt 1885, which seems off by ten years. It does seem like there might be an overstrike to correct it to 15 years.

On the 1920 Federal Census he is still in New York City, working as an insurance agent. He worked for Met Life. This census lists his year of immigration as 1890 and that he was naturalized in 1895. His native language is Yiddish.

On the 1930 Federal Census he is still in New York City and lists his occupation as insurance. He says he was 24 at the time of his first marriage. Immigration is now 1888.

I've not found a record of Marcus on the 1940 Census, so he may have passed away in the intervening years.

Mottel married first #71 Gitel "Gertrude" Zuckermann. She is the daughter of Morris & Yente Zuckermann. She is an ancestor in the Zukermann Line.

Marriage notes

They married 1881.

Other names for Gertrude: Gitel Neumann.

Gertrude was born 1860. She died 12 Dec 1892 in Providence, Providence Co., Rhode Island from nephritis.

Gitel was born in Nov or Dec of 1860 as she was thirty-two and zero months at the time of her death.

Hamburg passenger lists show Gitel immigrated on the British steamship Lincoln registered out of Grimsby. It departed from Hamburg, Germany on 2 Sep 1889 and came via Liverpool. Her destination was Boston. The records indicate she originally came from Husiatyn, Ukraine, which was in the Austro-Hungarian Empire at that time. With her are Moses, Carl, Hanna and Clara.

In the Rhode Island Death Index, she is listed as a relative of Tonie Neumann.

Mottel married and divorced second #1152 «Unknown».

Marriage notes

They divorced Bef 13 Jan 1895.

His marriage license with Amelia says that he was divorced from his second wife. We are assuming that the unknown woman is the second wife and that they married some time after Gitel's death in 1892.

«Unknown» died.

Mottel married third #145 Amelia "Mollie" Krautzner.

Marriage notes

They married 13 Jan 1895 in Providence, Rhode Island.

They were married by Rabbi Nathan L. Rabinowitz.

Other names for Mollie: Amelia Kreutzenauer, Amelia Newman, Marion Newman.

Mollie was born May 1868 in Austria. She died Abt 1946.

She is in the group picture «here».

She is listed in the 1900 Census as "Marion" and immigrating in 1892 from Austria. She is not shown as naturalized. Her parents were from Austria.

Originally the census taker had marked Marion as married for 19 years, the same number as Marcus. This is overwritten to be 16 years. However, even this number seems erroneous. That would put her marriage abt 1884. Gertrude's youngest child was born in 1887. Further, the 1930 Census will say that she was 27 years old at the time of her first marriage, which would be around 1895. I suspect the census taker made a second mistake and the number should have been 6, not 16.

On the 1910 Census her name is given as Emily.

On the 1920 Census she is in New York City and her name is given as Amelia. This census lists her year of immigration as 1890 and that she was naturalized, presumably with her husband in 1895. Her native language is Yiddish.

On the 1930 Census she is still in New York City. She says she was 27 at the time of his first marriage. Immigration is still shown as 1890.
