#169 Hanna Neumann ( Marcus "Mottel" NeumannYisroel Leib NeumannChaim Jossef Neumann )

Other names for Hanna: Anna Newman, Anna Wagman.

Hanna was born Oct 1885 in Austria. She died 4 Nov 1963 in Plainview, Long Island, New York. She was buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Flushing, Queens Co., New York.

She is in the group picture «here».

She immigrated from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. She appears on the 1900 Federal Census of Providence, Rhode Island, living with her parents.

On the 1910 Federal Census she is in Manhattan, New York, still at home.

Anna was cadgey about her birth date and location. By the 1920 Federal Census of the Bronx, New York, she is listing her birth year as 1890, a story she stuck with in later life. However, note that she reported her birth date as Abt 1885 on the New York State Census of the same year. She is also listing her birthplace as Rhode Island on the 1920 Census.

On the 1930 Federal Census of the Bronx, Anna is reporting she was born in New York.

She appears on the 1940 Federal Census of Manhattan, New York. Her age is listed as 49, putting a birth year of about 1891. Her birth place is back to Rhode Island.

Hanna married #170 William Marcus Goldstein. He is an ancestor in the Wagman Line.

Marriage notes

They married 12 Feb 1911 in New York City, New York.

Other names for William: William Marcus Wagman.

William was born 25 Mar 1884 in Bucharest, Romania. He died 21 May 1948 in New York, Queens Co., New York. He was buried 23 May 1948 in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Flushing, Queens Co., New York.

Family story has it that he was an only child. His Declaration of Intention for Naturalization states that he arrived on the ship Spree from Bremen, Germany on 18 Dec 1890. It notes that he was 5'2", black hair, brown eyes, 125 pounds.

Looking at that passenger list for William and his mother, Molly, we see that the Spree actually arrived 22 Dec 1890...her second voyage. There are only two boys of approximately the right age who are traveling without several siblings. The first is D. Jakobromitz, who is seven years old and from Austria; he doesn't seem a good match. The second is Willy Goldstein, age seven and born in Russia. Willy is traveling with Mali Goldstein, age 27. They are intending a "protracted sojourn"...i.e., immigrating. According to the shipping manifest, Mali died en route. This change of family name is discussed under his mother.

So far, William has not been found on the 1900 Census, either as a Goldstein or a Wagman.

He first declared his intent to naturalize on 4 Jun 1904. Two years later, on 1 Jun 1906, the petition was approved. On 30 Jul 1912, he was admitted to citizenship.

He appears on the 1910 Federal Census of Manhattan, New York living as a boarder with Joseph & Rosie Kaplan. His age was originally entered as 21 but then overwritten as 26. He is a draftsman with an oil refinery. Joseph signed William's Petition for Naturalization as a witness.

His World War I Draft Registration (incorrectly indexed in Ancestry.com as William Morris Wagman) lists him as short and small with black hair and black eyes.

He appears on the 1920 Federal Census of Bronx, New York working as a mechanical engineer. He became a Civil Engineer for the City of New York and was part of the group that designed the Queens Midtown Tunnel, the West Side Highway and the Tri-Boro Bridge. He graduated from Cooper Union.

They are still in the Bronx on the 1930 Federal Census.

By the 1940 Federal Census they have moved to Manhattan, New York and he works as a draftsman making $3,200 per year.

His World War II draft registration:

According to his death certificate, he died at 1:50 a.m. at Physician's Hospital in Queens. There was a Dr. Newman in attendance, who was not a staff physician. I have no idea if this was a relation to his wife. His death certificate incorrectly lists his birth year as 1886.
