James died 1840.
So far, I've found no evidence of James on any census. His great-granddaughter-in-law said she thought that the family might have been out in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania for a while. There is a James Copeland found in Manor, Lancaster Co. However, we continue to see this individual through the 1850 and 1860 censuses and James died in 1840. I also believe that the widow Mrs. Copeland in Manor is his wife, Cynthia.
∞ James married #585 Cynthia A. Carnahan◊. She is the daughter of William & Jane (Brown) Carnahan.
Cynthia was born 1818 in South Huntingdon, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. She died 17 Jan 1911 in Moweaqua, Shelby Co., Illinois. She was buried 19 Jan 1911 in Moweaqua, Shelby Co., Illinois.
William was their only child living at the time of James' death according to [Hedley].
We don't find James Copeland listed on the 1840 Census. However, Ruth (Knepper) Copeland thought the family had moved to Lancaster Co. for a period. We find a "Mrs. Copeland, widow" living there on the 1840 Federal Census of Manor. She has a young boy living with her who could be William. There are also two girls, one under five and one between five and ten years of age, living in the household. The census didn't record relationships, so we don't know if these were daughters or other relations; we do know that some of Cynthia's relations lived with the family later.
Looking at the 1850 Federal Census, Cynthia has remarried to Archibald Pool. Their names are listed next to those of her parents, William & Jane Carnahan, leading one to believe they have become neighbors. Lavina Carnahan, age 19, is living with the Pools with an occupation of laborer.
On the 1860 Federal Census they are still on the farm and her new family has increased by two more children. There is a Catharine McCoy, age 16, from Virginia living with them.
On the 1870 Federal Census Archibald and Cynthia (spelled Cintha) have left the farm and moved to Moweaqua, Shelby Co., Illinois. Living with them are Hampton and Findley. Findley is shown as born in Michigan, which is inconsistent with other censuses. There is also an Eva Pool, age 20, born in Ohio. Since this census does not list the relationship to the head of household, it is a bit uncertain who she is. Since she doesn't show on the 1880 census, but Ariadna does, I'm assuming it's a census taker's version of her name.
On the 1880 Federal Census she is living with her son, Hampton Pool, in Prarieton, Illinois; we presume Archibald has passed away. This census gives us her middle initial.
I lose track of her on the 1900 Census. She is no longer shown with her son, Hampton, and has not yet moved in with her other son, Finley.
She is living with her son, Finley, on the 1910 Federal Census in Flat Branch, Illinois.
