He was a high school math teacher and department chairman, working at various times in: Sioux City, Iowa; Moline, Illinois; Highland Park, Illinois; and Chicago, Illinois. He wrote at one time that his pupils had gone on to be "Professors at Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Rutgers, Purdue, Northeastern, Virginia, and Arizona."
His hobby was Civil War history, in general, and Lincolniana, in particular.
