#195 Samuel "Sam" Relkin ( Avram "Nathan" Relkin )

Sam was born Abt 1887 in Russia. He died 23 Feb 1932. He was buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Flushing, Queens Co., New York.

So far, we've found not clear record of naturalization. There is a Petition for Citizenship for a Samuel Relkin dated 1 Jul 1929. It indicates that Samuel arrived on 5 Nov 1903, which is roughly consistent with later censuses. It gives the birth place as Minsk, Russia, which is quite near Slutsk. However, it lists the birth year as 1880, which seems a bit too early.

He appears on the 1910 Census of Manhattan, New York, living with his mother and siblings. He immigrated in 1904, three years before his mother and several of the younger children. He speaks English and drives a furniture wagon for a living.

He appears on the 1920 Census of the Bronx with Sarah, Mollie, Abraham (spelled Abarmum) and Eugene. His initial naturalization papers have been filed. There is also a cousin, Rosie Levine, born in Russia, living with them. He is still driving for a furniture company.

On the 1930 Census, Eugene's name appears to have changed to Oscar and a new son, Lawrence, is present. Another cousin, Susan Parker, is living with them.

Sam married #275 Sarah Goldman.

Marriage notes

They married Abt 1913.

The approximate year of marriage is taken from the 1930 Census figures. Since Sarah's birth year changes so much between census years, the year was estimated from Samuel's age at marriage.

Other names for Sarah: Sarah Relkin.

Sarah was born Abt 1888 in Russia. She died 9 Aug 1974. She was buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Flushing, Queens Co., New York.

Sarah's first name comes from the 1920 Census. Her last name is taken from a family tree done by Jack Kaminsky. She is listed as immigrating in 1905 and still an alien.

Her age drops precipitously on the 1930 Census. She goes from being born Abt 1888 on the 1920 Census to being born Abt 1910.
